A beginner-friendly review of the first season's unusual balance of horror, comedy, and character drama.
Editorial verdict
Chainsaw Man season 1 is a confident introduction to a world where grotesque danger and ordinary desire sit in the same cramped room.
What works
The season gives Denji a clear emotional starting point without pretending that his goals are noble or complicated. That directness makes the quieter scenes surprisingly affecting, especially when small comforts become more important than grand promises.
Its cast is built around friction. Power, Aki, and Denji do not form a polished team, and the comedy comes from that awkwardness as often as it comes from jokes. The production also uses silence and composition to keep the horror from becoming background noise.
The series is strongest when its visual confidence supports a small character decision. A room, a meal, or a pause before a fight can explain the cast more efficiently than a long speech. That gives the season a distinctive rhythm: spectacle attracts attention, but the uncomfortable everyday details are what make the relationships stick.
Where it is limited
The first season ends while several larger questions are still deliberately open. Some supporting characters receive only a narrow introduction, and the pacing may feel like a setup if you want a complete supernatural conflict in one cour.
Its tonal changes can also be divisive. The story moves from bleak danger to crude comedy without always softening the transition, and the emotional distance of some characters may feel frustrating rather than intriguing. This is a deliberate roughness, but it means the season rewards viewers who accept unevenness as part of its identity.
Who should watch
It is a good entry point for viewers who want action anime with sharper character discomfort than a standard power fantasy. Expect violence, bleak humor, and an intentionally unfinished first chapter.
Start with it if you want a series that treats ambition, hunger, friendship, and fear as messy motives rather than clean heroic steps. It is less suitable for viewers looking for a gentle tone, a settled team dynamic, or a story that explains every mystery before the finale.
